Leg Three of the Ekiden traverses the northern edge of Lake Rotorua. It is the most scenic leg by far, but also, arguably, the toughest. If you are up to the challenge, this is the most rewarding leg of the race.
Leg three begins with 3km of flat along Hamurana Rd, hugging the lakeside and with beautiful views across the lake throughout. The road turns inland around the 4km mark for a challenging section of hills cuts through native bush. The crest is just past 5.6km and from there it is downhill or flat all the way to the changeover point with most of the final 1500 metres back on the lakeside.
